Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR), in partnership with Clean Greens Farm & Market, Solace, the Black Agriculture Leadership Council, and the NAACP, is collaborating with the community to envision healing gardens and an enhanced park space in Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Park that promotes solidarity, strengthens community resilience, and supports healthy and sustainable living.

By centering community in the design development, SPR aims to co-design a garden that celebrates Seattle’s Black diaspora, highlights Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy, and creates a healing space to commemorate and memorialize the lives lost too soon to gun violence.

MISSION STATEMENT CO-AUTHORED WITH OUR PARTNERS
Our mission at the Healing Garden and Park is to provide a serene and supportive sanctuary for families and survivors affected by gun violence, along with the effects of grief from losing loved ones. Through the transformative power of nature, therapeutic activities, and compassionate community engagement, we seek to nurture healing, promote resilience, and honor the memory of those lost. We strive to create a space of solace, reflection, and growth, where healing can flourish, and hope can blossom amidst the shadows of tragedy. Together, we envision a future where hearts find comfort, wounds find solace, and a path toward peace and healing is illuminated for all who seek refuge in our gardens, which will provide food sustainability, healthy living/eating options and will help to battle the disparities in the African American Communities related to their family’s diet by providing chemical- free organic vegetables to the community and promote a healthier cultural diet.
